Taco Bell’s Education Support to 210,000 Employees

As individuals, we can all act even in little ways to alleviate the condition of people who do not have the same resources as ourselves, like perhaps helping underprivileged kids gain opportunities through donations or planned skill-training sessions. However, it is undeniable that more action from institutions is necessary for greater societal change. States like New York and Los Angeles have been responding to this truth through community projects such as providing free lunches to hundreds of thousands of children and making library books accessible to low-income families.

A groundbreaking move on the corporate side has come from a famous fast food chain as Taco Bell helps all 210,000 of its employees towards educational opportunities.

On March 15, Taco Bell announced that employees at the chain’s 7,000 stores nationwide are eligible for education classes at 80 online universities, as well as tuition assistance and college credit for job training at the restaurant.

Other chains such as McDonald’s and Starbucks also offer support to some employees through programs like this. Employees with a high school degree or less need the above-mentioned benefits to have better career prospects in the future.

“When we surveyed our employees, education support was one of the top three things they asked for,” Frank Tucker, global chief people officer at Taco Bell, said in a statement. “The barriers to achieving their education goals were time, money and support.”

Beyond this, the program also seems to be mutually beneficial to Taco Bell and its employees, as 98% of the people who participated in the pilot batch stayed in the company for more than six months. It’s a win-win situation for now, with even larger potential in the long run.

Fine Arts Museum’s Newest Employee Is A Puppy

Most working dogs toil alongside cops or therapists for their impeccable sense of smell. Others end up in various unique circumstances, sometimes sniffing out pests in greenhouses. For some, a soft, wet nose leads to the job of a lifetime. The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston recently employed Weimaraner puppy Riley to protect its paintings from pesky bugs.

“We have lots of things that bring, by their very nature, bugs or pests with them,” said Katie Getchell… deputy director of the Museum of Fine Arts. “If he can be trained to sit down in front of an object that he smells a bug in, that we can’t smell or see, then we could take that object, inspect it, and figure out what’s going on — that would be remarkable in terms of preserving objects.”

At only twelve-weeks-old, the adorable pup is already making more headway than most. He is working in tandem with the museum’s regular inspection protocols — only he’s a lot cuter.

“Pests are an ongoing concern for museums,” Getchell said. “It’s exciting to think about this as a new way to address the problem.”

Iceland Enforces Equal Pay For Men And Women

It’s the 21st century and women’s rights are finally becoming a thing of the present. With startups like Xinca employing single mothers and Saudi Arabia getting with the times, things are looking up. Kicking the new year off with an even greater win for the female workforce is Iceland. The Nordic country is deeming it illegal to pay women less than men.

“Holding women back holds our economy back. Tackling gender inequality and discrimination is good for business and for all of us,” … said [Sam Smethers, who campaigns for women’s rights as CEO of the Fawcett Society.]

The law will apply to companies employing more than 25 staffers at a time. Of course, bonuses aren’t out of the question — but they are rewarded only to top performers. Women’s rights campaigners have naturally taken their approval to social media.

Tennis player Billie Jean King added: “Iceland again leading in the equality movement. A new female Prime Minister, and a Parliament where nearly half of its members are women. Equal representation benefits everyone!”

Currently on top of closing gender gaps, it’s no surprise that Iceland is pushing the limits for women. After all, they do run the world (at least according to Beyonce).
